1) Nature versus Nurture. His sister is Mona Simpson but he didn't know it until he was an adult. Mona Simpson was one of my favorite novelists from the late 80s. Her first novel, Anywhere but Here, was about her relationship with her parents. Which, ironically, were Steve Jobs' parents. But since Steve Jobs was adopted (see below), they didn't know they were brother-sister until the 90s when he tracked her down. It's proof (to an extent) of the nature versus nurture argument. Two kids, without knowing they were brother and sister, both having a unique sensibility of life on this planet to become among the best artists in the world in completely different endeavors. And, to me it was great that I was a fan of both without realizing (even before they realized) that they were related.

2) His father's name is Abdulfattah Jandali. If you had to ask me what Steve Jobs' father's name was I never in one zillion years would've guessed that and that Steve Jobs biologically was half Syrian Muslim. For some reason I thought he was Jewish. Maybe it's because I wanted to be him so I projected my own background onto him. His parents were two graduate students who I guess weren't sure if they were ready for a kid so put him up for adoption and then a few years later had another kid (see above). So I didn't know he was adopted. The one requirement his biological parents had was that he be adopted by two college-educated people. But the couple that adopted him lied at first and turned out not to be college educated (the mom was not a high school graduate), so the deal almost fell through until they promised to send Steve to college. A promise they couldn't keep (see below). So despite many layers of lies and promises broken, it all worked out in the end. People can save a lot of hassle by not having such high expectations and overly ambitious worries in the first place.

3) He made the game "Breakout." If there was one thing I loved almost as much as the games on the Apple II+, it was playing Breakout on my first-generation Atari (I can't remember, was that the Atari 2600?). And then Breakout on every version of my Blackberry since 2000. If he had never done anything else in life and I had met him and he said, "I'm the guy who made Breakout," I would've said, "you are the greatest genius of the past 100 years." Funny how things turn out. He went on from Atari to form Apple. Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari, went to form the greatest restaurant chain in the history of mankind: Chuck E. Cheese.

4) He denied paternity on his first child, claiming he was sterile. The mother had to initially raise the kid using welfare checks. I have no judgment on this at all. Raising kids is hard. And when you have a kid you feel like this enormous energy and creativity you have for the world is going to get misdirected into a... little baby (Jobs' parents must've felt that way as well. Like father, like son). Heck, I originally wanted my first kid to be aborted. But people change, mature, grow up. Eventually Jobs became a good father. And that's what counts in the end. Much worse if it was the reverse. I didn't know this either: that the Lisa computer (the "Apple III") was named after this first child.

5) He's a pescetarian. In other words, he eats fish but no other meat. And he eats anything else a vegetarian eats (including eggs and dairy). I think from now on I'm going to be a pescetarian, just because Steve Jobs is one. Except when I'm in Argentina. In Argentina you have to eat steak. Ted Danson and Mary Tyler Moore consider themselves pescetarians. Somehow, even the world "pescetarian" seems like it was invented in California.

6) He doesn't give any money to charity. And when he became Apple's CEO he stopped all of their philanthropic programs. He said, "wait until we are profitable". Now they are profitable, and sitting on $40b cash, and still not corporate philanthropy. I actually think Jobs is probably the most charitable guy on the planet. Rather than focus on which mosquitoes to kill in Africa (Bill Gates is already focusing on that), Jobs has put his energy into massively improving quality of life with all of his inventions. People think that entrepreneurs have to some day "give back". This is not true. They already gave at the office. Look at the entire iPod/Mac/iPhone/Disney ecosystem and ask how many lives have benefited directly (because they've been hired) or indirectly (because they use the products to improve their quality of life). As far as I know, Jobs has never even commented about his thoughts on charity. Good for him. As one CEO of a (currently) Fortune 10 company once told me when I had my hand out for a charitable website, "Screw charity!"

7) He lied to Steve Wozniak. When they made Breakout for Atari, Wozniak and Jobs were going to split the pay 50-50. Atari gave Jobs $5000 to do the job. He told Wozniak he got $700 so Wozniak took home $350. Again, no judgment. Young people do things. Show me someone who says he's been honest from the day he was born and I'll show you a liar. It's by making mistakes, having fights, finding out where your real boundaries in life are, that allow you to truly know where the boundaries are.

8) He's a Zen Buddhist. He even thought about joining a monastery and becoming a monk. His guru, a Zen monk, married him and his wife. When I was going through some of my hardest times my only relief was sitting with a Zen group. Trying to quiet the mind to deal with the onrush of non-stop pain that was trying to invade there. The interesting thing about Jobs being a a Zen Buddhist is that most people would think that serious Buddhism and being one of the wealthiest people in the world come into conflict with each other. Isn't Buddhism about non-attachment? Didn't Buddha himself leave his riches and family behind?
But the answer is "no". It's normal to pursue passions and outcomes, but just not to become overly attached to those outcomes. Being happy regardless of the outcome. A great story is the Zen master and his student walking by a river. A prostitute was there and needed to be carried over the river. The Zen master picked her up and carried her across the river and then put her down. Then the master and student kept walking. A few hours later the student was so agitated he finally had to ask, "Master, how could you touch and help that prostitute! That's against what we believe in!" And the Master said, "I left her by the river. Why are you still carrying her?"

9) He didn't go to college. I actually didn't know this initially. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are the famous college dropouts that I knew about. But apparently Steve Jobs went to Reed College for one semester and then dropped out. I guess you don't need college to program computers, make computers, build businesses, make movies, manage people, etc. (Of course, you can see all my other posts on why kids should not go to college.)

10) Psychedelics. Steve Jobs used LSD at least once when he was younger. In fact, he said about the experience, it was "one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." Apple's slogan for many years was "Think Different". Maybe using a drug which tore him from the normal frame of reference taught him how to look at problems from such a unique perspective. I don't think LSD is for everyone, but when you combine it with the innate genius the man had, plus the many ups and downs that he experienced, plus the Zen Buddhism and all of the other things above, it's quite possible it all adds up to the many inventions he's been able to produce.

Steve Jobs' story is filled with nuance and ambiguity. People study Steve Jobs by looking at his straightforward business successes. Yes, he started Apple in a garage. Yes, he started Pixar and almost went broke with it. Yes, he started and sold Next and he was fired as CEO of Apple, and blah blah blah. But none of that will ever explain the man behind the genius. None of that will explain all the products he invented that we use today. None of that will tell us about the iPad, Toy Story, the MacBook Air, the Apple II+, etc. A man's successes can be truly understood only if we can count his tears. And unfortunately in the case of Steve Jobs, that is one task that's impossible.

Latest Invention: Fuel Cell Charger that Runs on Methanol

Recently Toshiba presented its limited amount of 3,000 units of methanol fuel cell charger. The company called its new invention Dynario. The device makes use of a single 14ml refill of methanol that can initiate the process of recharging device in just 20 seconds.

It would be interesting to note that one shot of methanol is enough to fully charge two mobile phones.

Toshiba's new invention runs on a fusion of methanol and atmospheric oxygen. The electricity is generated as a result of a chemical reaction between the two. Currently the 3,000 units of the methanol fuel cell charger are available only at Shop1048 in Japan. One unit can be acquired for around $330. One replacement methanol fuel pack costs around $6, informs EnviroGadget.

At the moment the company is very cautions with launching the device in other countries. However, its test run is expected to become successful.

Samsung announced their latest budget Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Ace back in January, and we have just been testing the Galaxy Ace for the last week.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace comes with Android 2.2 Froyo, and it has just recently gone on sale in the UK, it comes with a range of features you would expect too see in a more expensive smartphone.

Specifications

As I mentioned previously, the Samsung Galaxy Ace comes with Android 2.2 Froyo out of the box, hardware wise you get 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels.

Processing is provided by an 800MHz processor, and there is also a five megapixel camera with 2x digital zoom and an LED flash, plus a range of shooting modes and photo effects.

You also get a built in FM Radio, Bluetooth 2.1, integrated 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, plus a microSD card slot, the model we tested came with a 2GB microSD card but it can take up to 32GB microSD cards.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace features 1350mAh battery, and the manufacturers specifications say that you will get up to 660 minutes of talk time on 2G, 390 minutes on 3G, plus up to 640 hours of standby time on 2G and 420 hours on 3G.

Design, Display and UI

The Samsung Galaxy Ace is designed to be a budget Android device, although it does feel very well made, maybe not as high as the Samsung Galaxy S, but it certainly feels better quality than the Samsung Galaxy Europa we tested recently.

The display is sharp and crisp and the design is excellent and it certainly feels very well made, and could quite easily be mistaken for a more expensive smartphone.

It comes with a pair of interchangeable covers, one black and one white, the black one features a rubberized texture which makes the phone easy to hold, whilst the white cover is smooth, and feels a bit more like plastic than the black one.

Camera

The camera on the Samsung Galaxy Ace is a five megapixel version, it also features two times digital zoom, and it is capable or recording video in a 320 x 240 resolution, no HD here unfortunately, and this is one of the cameras week points, the video recording isn’t the best, but I suppose this can be forgiven for the price.

The camera on the Galaxy Ace is pretty good , it does a good job at capturing pretty decent photos and it has a range of features built in which include autofocus, a range of shooting modes which include continuous and panorama plus a range of photo effects.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Ace is designed to be a budget Android smartphone, and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised with it, as it has a range of features that you would expect in a more expensive Android device.

It definitely feels a lot better quality that some of the other budget Android devices we have tested, and feels very well built, the display is sharp and crisp and the touchscreen is responsive.

The camera is decent, it will do a good jobs on photos, video is another matter and if you are the sort of person who uses your smartphone for recording a lot of videos you may want to consider something else.

Overall we really liked the Samsung Galaxy Ace, for the money it is an excellent budget smartphone, very well made and very well designed, if you are in the market for a budget Android device, I would definitely recommend you add the Samsung Galaxy Ace to your list of devices to check out.

We got our hands on the new LG Optimus Black last week, which is LG’s latest Android smartphone, and we have been testing it out over the weekend, so we thought it was about time to let you guys know what we thought of the LG Optimus Black.

The LG Optimus Black is an Android 2.2 device, it comes with Android 2.2.2 out of the box, although LG have said that they intend to updated it to 2.3 shortly after release. The Optimus Black is due to launch in the UK and Europe later this month and it is scheduled to launch in the US next month.

Specifications

The LG Optimus Black features a 4 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, there is also a 5 megapixel camera on the back, which has a range of features that include a dual LED flash, autofocus and Geo-tagging.

The camera is capable of recording HD video in 720p at 30 frames per second, and you also get a 2 megapixel up front for video chat. processing is provided by a 1GHz TI IMAP 3630 processor.

Other features on the LG Optimus Black include a built in FM Radio, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, DNLA, and the Optimus Black can be used as a mobile hotspot.

Design, Display, UI

The Optimus Black measures 4.8 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide, and it is pretty thin measuring just 0.23 inches at its thinnest part, it is also very light weighing in at just 3.84 ounces, it does fell like a wall made and well designed device.

The Display on the Optimus Black is excellent, it uses NOVA technology which is designed to provide you with a much brighter display, without using up your battery, and everything looks sharp and crystal clear on the Optimus Black display.

The Optimus Black Display is designed to give you a much brighter screen for outdoor use, and this works pretty well, and it is definitely a lot easier to use outdoors than some of the other devices available on the market.

The User Interface on the Optimus Black is very good, LG have kept things to a minimum and haven’t added a lot extra widgets, and it makes the UI very nice to use and easily customizable to suit your needs.

Hopefully this should ensure that LG will be able to upgrade the Optimus Black to future versions of Android without too much trouble.

Processor And Camera

The Optimus Black features a single core 1GHz OMAP 3630 processor, and it seems pretty snappy, there we no delays or lag when launching apps, watching videos, browsing the web, and the processor seemed to handle the majority of tasks very well.

The main camera on the Optimus Black is a 5 megapixel one on the back, it features a dual LED flash, and ge0-tagging, there is also built in autofocus, and the camera does a good job, exactly what you would expect from a five megapixel camera on a smartphone.

The rear camera is capable of recording HD video, in 720p at 30 frames per second, and just like with the still photos the Optimus Black gives you exactly what you would expect from a decent smartphone camera.

You also get a two megapixel camera up front for video chat, which is a lot better than some of the other smartphones available that come with a VGA camera on the front.

Battery Life

The Optimus Black features a 1500mAh battery, and with the bright 4 inch display I was expecting the battery life to suffer a little on the Optimus Black, I was quite surprised with the results. LG’s NOVA technology, obviously does exactly what it was designed too, give you a bright and crisp display without sacrificing battery life.

Conclusion

Overall I was quite impressed with the LG Optimus Black, it has an excellent display, and I really like the user interface, it is good too see a manufacturer just adding the bare minimum to Android, although we would have liked to see the Optimus Black come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box.

It does a good job with videos and gaming, and it well designed and light, and has a number of cool features, plus a decent camera, I would definitely recommend you take a look at the LG Optimus Black if you are in the market for a new smartphone.

Both HTC and Samsung have been leading the pack with their Android smartphones, and HTC’s latest offering will appeal to Android fans who want the latest hardware and features in a stylish design.

Hardware Specifications

The HTC Sensation has a range of impressive hardware specifications, just what you would expect from the latest flagship Android device from HTC, it features a 4.3 inch 4HD display with a resolution of540 x 960 pixels, processing is provided by a dual core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor, it also comes with the latest version of Android Android 2.3.3 and HTC’s Sense 3.0.

The HTC Sensation comes with 768MB of ram, you also get 1GB of storage built in, plus a microSD card slot, plus 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS, a G-sensor, gyro sensor, a proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and a micro USB 2.0 connection.

The Sensation is equipped with dual camera’s, up front there is a VGA fixed focus camera for video chat, on the back you get an 8 megpaixel camera with a dual LED flash and auto-focus, the camera is capable or recording Full High Definition video in 1080p.

Other features on the HTC Sensation include, DNLA, WiFi and USB tethering, and it also comes with the latest version of HTC’s custom Android user interface, HTC Sense 3.0.

Design, Display, User Interface

HTC has stepped up their efforts with the camera on the HTC Sensation, providing an 8 megapixel camera with a dual LED flash and built in auto-focus, the camera is capable of recording full HD video in 1080p, and it is certainly an improvement on some of the cameras we have tested on previous HTC devices.

The HTC Sensations camera does a good job at snapping photos and recording video when the lighting is good, it isn’t as good in poor light, but you still get the sort of quality you would expect from a smartphone camera.

Battery Life

The HTC Sensation features a 1520mAh battery, and it works pretty well for every day tasks like surfing the web,checking your email, and playing games, its not quite as good as the battery on the Samsung Galaxy S II, and didn’t last as long when we tested it, but it is still adequate for every day use.

If you are a heavy user you can expect to have to charge your HTC Sensation on a daily basis, for average users, performing normal tasks like checking email, surfing the web etc, you would probably end up charging your sensation every one and a half to two days.

Conclusion

The HTC Sensation is an impressive smartphone, things that we liked about it were the bright, clear display and the fast processor that made everything feel snappy on the Sensation.

The Design is very nice, and the Sensation feels like a quality, well built smartphone, it fits nicely in your hand and considering its large 4.3 inch display it still feels light and thin.

The user interface (UI) is also very good on the Sensation, with a wide range of features that can be customized to suit your personal needs, we already liked HTC’s previous version of their Sense UI, and Sense 3.0 adds more features and is an improvement over the previous offering.

The HTC Sensation is definitely a smartphone that would be worth checking out, comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy S II, it is a hard choice between the two devices, we would recommend that you check out both devices to find out which one would be best suited for your needs.

Just like it happened when the world awaited the iPhone 4 release, rumors are running about in every website that you could think of. iPhone 5 is already a phenomena that is sure to take the smartphone market by storm. As usual, it’s an Apple product and Apple’s devices have always caused such a huge flutter of activity in the market even before they get released officially.

iPhone 5 features are much touted to change the way smartphones would function. Improved interface, greater Near Field Communications, much better gesture-based controls and such startlingly new technologies are rumored to be figure in the iPhone 5 features. Even if half the news that we hear about iPhone 5 turns out to be true, then we sure have a rocker smartphone in our hands.

Apple recently bought about 300 special glass cutting machines and that was reported by DigiTimes. If that was true, then surely Apple is onto something with its iPhone 5′s new glass display.

8 MP Camera with Dual Flash – Unimaginably for Apple, it has not yet offered 8 MP cameras on its devices while Samsung and HTC have already come out with their own 8 MP cameras already – way too early for Apple. The iPhone 5 would be an answer to this. Or so we think. An 8 MP camera with dual flash on the rear means higher resolution pictures, greater quality and most notably, greater quality in low-light pictures where the red-eye occurs. Of course, we need to keep our fingers crossed for the iPhone 5 specifications to have this.

A5 Processor – Of all features of iPhone 5, one of the finest thing we believe is the processor. Apple has finally relieved its A4 processor and brought in a dual-core processor that fires up its iPad 2. If iPad and iPhone 4 had the same processors, then it is quite logical to assume that iPhone 5 and iPad 2 would have the same – the A5 processor dual-core for enhanced performance. This is a very sure rumor as far as we know.

More Gesture-based – No Home Button – Oops! No home button? Well, yeah, quite possibily. Apple has moved to improved gesture based controls through its iOS 5. So it is quite possible that the home screen might be dropped for enhanced gesture-controls – one large interface change in iPhone 5 specifications.

Storage and RAM – the features of iPhone 5 is more likely to have an improved RAM of 1GB to go with the dual-core processor. The RAM was 512 MB in the iPhone 4. The storage too might have a chance of increase. Some rumors said it was 64GB this time, but there are some people who say that Apple could very well – considering the wide range of devices, the iPhone-PC or iPhone-Mac sync – do away with the internal storage thing!

Part Two – the Software
One thing that has always stunned experts is the way Apple brings changes to its software. It is sometimes very subtle where you expect it to be huge, and hugely stunning where you expect it to be subtle. Most experts feel that after the recently concluded WWDC – where iOS 5 and iCloud were the topics – there could be no great change but for these two, in the iPhone 5 specifications. Well, that may be true to a large extent, but only a final release of the iPhone 5 will tell.

Here’s again a list of things we could be looking for in the iPhone 5 specs.

iOS 5 – A brand new phone and a brand new OS. The iOS (formerly known as iPhone OS) featured since the days of the iPhone 2G. These are very popular times of the iOS 4 but that is soon set to change. IOS 5 has been announced officially. The way it works is through gesture-based controls more than button taps. Perhaps that is why people suspect the lack of a home button in the iPhone 5 features. Design-wise too there are quite a number of changes and enhancements in iOS 5 which was released in the WWDC held this June.

iCloud – We just had the release of some beta apps with iCloud enabled in them. ICloud is the next big thing according to Apple. It is all about sync and nothing more – sync done right. Usually sync is where you had to connect devices and take further steps – for instance, iTunes. But with iCloud all that work is done with a simple tap of a button – the iCloud button. From within iCloud enabled applications, all you need to do is tap this and your document, photo, contact, bookmark, calendar or whatever gets pushed to all your other Apple devices with the iCloud equipped!

HD Video Recording and HDMI Output – In sync with the iOS 5 features, there is a strong possibility that iPhone 5 comes with HDMI output and most certainly with HD video recording. iPhone 4 had HD video recording already and iPhone 5 might either have the same or an enhanced version of it.

iPhone 5 is rumored to be released in October. There has been no official word on iPhone 5 as yet. Not even its existence or development has been hinted at by anyone from Apple. But we all know. That was how it was with iPhone 4 too – of course, we had a prototype leak back then. But still, iPhone 5 is on everyone’s lips. It is just a matter of time before we see the magnum opus from Apple with all its bells and whistles!

The stage is set for a showdown between television networks and cable/satellite TV services, thanks to the internet. It won’t happen overnight, but your monthly cable or satellite bill could eventually be replaced by a monthly bill from Hulu, an online service that streams TV shows on demand.

For $10 a month, viewers will reportedly have access to a wider selection of shows than the free, ad-supported version Hulu currently offers. The service would work on PCs and specialized devices such as the iPad, videogame consoles and set-top boxes. The company plans to test a version of this “Hulu Plus” subscription, an expected development, with select users as early as this month to find out whether they’ll will bite, according to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal and All Things Digital.

In order for consumers to pay for a video service like that, it will need to be reasonably comprehensive. So it’s no accident that the same week Hulu’s subscription plans came to light, a Bloomberg report surfaced that the company is talking with CBS, Viacom and Time Warner’s television studio divisions to add their shows. That would be on top of a line-up that already includes “Fox, NBC Universal, ABC, ABC Family, Biography, Lionsgate, Endemol, MGM, MTV Networks, National Geographic, Digital Rights Group, Paramount, PBS, Sony Pictures Television, Warner Bros. and more,” including Wired.com.

For ten bucks, one wouldn’t expect the level of programming cable and satellite offer for larger monthly bills. But if paid Hulu works, the networks will have proof that the internet can circumvent cable and satellite companies and they could easily add more expensive content tiers down the road.

If the networks prove they can charge consumers directly, and consumers are happy to supply their own “cable boxes” in the form of game consoles, television-connected computers, set-top boxes, tablets and so on, it’s difficult to see why networks would tolerate cable and satellite providers grabbing a slice of profits, just for sending the shows through one pipe rather than the other.

Cable and satellite are classic middlemen. When the internet meets the middleman, the middleman tends to disappear — or at least be replaced by a thinner middleman. We’ve seen it with record stores, classified ad-dependent newspapers, video-rental stores, bookstores and any other business that delivers something that the internet can deliver more efficiently.

The “thinner middleman” as far as IPTV is concerned could be ISPs, which already charge more for faster data plans capable of delivering better-looking video. But as multipurpose providers, they’ll never command as large a slice of the pie as cable/satellite companies did with their television-only pipes.

Television networks hold the trump cards, because they own the content that will be distributed — however the market decides to distribute it. Still, cable providers reportedly hope to replace themselves, in a sense, by providing competing services for delivering television over the net. After all, most of them also provide ISP services, and don’t want to lose a source of revenue.

But that ship may have sailed. The networks (with Providence Equity Partners) already own the Hulu internet distribution system, which is accessible from any ISP, and expect it to earn $200 million this year even before the subscription has launched.

Now that the networks are set to start charging for a more comprehensive version of Hulu, cable and satellite companies should be even more nervous about how television shows will be delivered in the coming years than they were already.

This section is dedicated to those who would like to write a Virus program, but don't have the knowledge to do so. First of all, writing a virus is no big deal. It is an easy project, but one which requires some basic programming skills, and the desire to write a virus! If either of these is missing, writing a virus would be tedious indeed! The survival of a virus is based in its ability to reproduce. "So how the fuck do I make a program reproduce?” you might ask. Simple, by getting it to copy itself to other files....

The functional logic of a virus is as follows:

1- Search for a file to infect

2- Open the file to see if it is infected

3- If infected, search for another file

4- Else, infect the file

5- Return control to the host program.

The following is an example of a simple virus:

- The virus does not test for prior infection

- it searches only for the first .COM file in the current directory. Careful when executing this file, since the first time it's executed it will search for and infect the first file in the directory. If we later run the newly infected file, it will find the first file in its directory, itself. Thus, it will re-infect itself over and over.

This is done to take the variables relative to BP, since the infection displaces the variables at exactly the length of the file. At the first infection, instruction "SUB BP, 107h" is 107h, so that the contents of BP is 0; when I call a variable with "BP+VARIABLE" the value of the variable's address is not modified. When I load it , for example, from a 100h byte infected file, the instruction "SUB BP, 107h" leaves me at address 207h which means BP=100h, the size of the original file. Had I called the variable without adding BP, I would have been short by 100h bytes. Find the first .COM file in the directory

These attributes mentioned in the commentary are the directory's entry attributes. When I set the attributes to 0, I'm telling DOS to search normal files. If I include a bit combination which provides the Hidden, System or Directory attributes, DOS will search for files with those attributes, as well as the normal files. If the search range includes the Volume bit, the search

is limited to that. These are the bits which correspond to each attribute:

The attributes I'm setting in AL are not the same as before. These are the "open" attributes. We are only interested in the first 3 bits,

OK, we now have the file attributes stored in AL. What we now need to do is to store in DX the offset of the variable where I've stored the ASCIIZ chain with the name of the file to be opened. In this case, we don't have a NAME_OF_FILE variable. Instead, the name is located in the DTA (Disk Transfer Area). I we have it in the DTA...... Why? Simply because when we search for a file to infect, all the information we need is returned to this memory area. This buffer, if it was not reset, is found in the PSP; more precisely, it starts at offset 80h and is 43d bytes in size.The DTA format is as follows:

Well, all that remains to be done is to give DX the position in memory where I've stored the filename: "MOV DX, E1h" and its's done. But careful now, remember that DTA starts at offset 80h, which means I have to pass to DX the value "80h+1Eh = 9Eh". That would than leave "MOV DX, 9Eh"; the problem is solved. Now you are probably asking yourselves what I mean by "handle". The handle is a number which tells DOS which file we want. DOS gives us a handle for each file we open so we have to be careful to have the correct handle for each file which we read/write.

The pointer's displacement, relative to the position of the pointer as specified in AL, is placed in CX and DX.

Pointer displacement modes set in AL:

(Here we still need the handle, but we don't need to set it again because the register which contained the information was not modified. The first byte to be written is a JUMP instruction (the symbol for the jump is below). What follows the jump is the address of the jump, file-length + 1. (test the "+ 1" thoroughly, since this can cause problems; if so, multiply by 18 or subtract 23.) Since the entire virus code is copied at the end of the file, the jump gives the virus control in an infected file.

Here, too, we need in DS:DX the address of the buffer which contains the filename string, but in this case DS and DX already contain those values from before.

What we are doing here is to "fix" the file, since when it was infected, the first few bytes are overwritten by the virus. That is why we reconstruct the file to its original state, by copying the first 3 bytes, which we had stored earlier, into memory.

As we mentioned before, in .COM files the executable code begins at offset 100h. The information found between 00h and 100h is program data, like the DTA for example. The main difference between a .COM file and an .EXE is that a .COM cannot occupy more than one memory segment, or 65535 bytes. .EXEs can, because DOS can 'tailor' them to fit into a number of different segments. Unlike.EXE files. .COM files are faithful reproductions of the contents of memory.

Here’s a magic trick to surprise your friends with. What they will see is this: you are at the Google homepage, and you casually ask someone to watch the Google logo. Then, you move two of your fingers to completely cover the “o”s in the Google logo. When you remove your fingers, to much surprise, the letters “o” will be missing from the logo. Now you ask your friend to move her fingers over the missing “o”s. After your friend removes the fingers, the logo will be complete again! The trick here? It’s not really the Google homepage you and your friend are looking at – it’s a fake page (darkartsmedia.com/Google.html). And when you click on the page, the letters of the logo will disappear after five seconds. Clicking again will make them reappear after five more seconds. So when you move your fingers to cover the Google logo, simply click anywhere on the page, and wait a bit before you remove your fingers… and when your friend covers the letters, you click again. (A third click, by the way, will change the page to an actual Google homepage so you can perform searches to “prove” the page is real.)

The "Run" line in the Start menu can be used to speed up access to a whole variety of functions.

Clicking the entry "Run" opens the box shown below, where commands may be typed and entered.

Opening applications in Run

Although applications can be opened in a variety of ways, the Run line often provides the quickest route. Desktop shortcut icons are also a quick route but you have to know how to create a shortcut for all the applications and you may end up with dozens of icons.

The best candidates for the Run line are applications that are in the "path" environment. The path environment is a set of folders whose names do not have to be included when entering a command. The path environment variable normally includes \Windows\ and \Windows\system32\. Many common accessories and Windows applets are in these folders and can be opened by entering just the executable file name. Several that I use constantly are the Registry editor (regedit) and the System Configuration Utility (msconfig). Note that neither of these frequently used system tools has an entry in Start- All Programs. The Run line is the standard method of accessing them.

Facebook, the world's largest social network, announced in July 2010 that it had 500 million users around the world. The company has grown at a meteoric pace, doubling in size since 2009 and pushing international competitors aside. Its policies, more than those of any other company, are helping to define standards for privacy in the Internet age.

The company, founded in 2004 by a Harvard sophomore, Mark Zuckerberg, began life catering first to Harvard students and then to all high school and college students. It has since evolved into a broadly popular online destination used by both teenagers and adults of all ages. In country after country, Facebook is cementing itself as the leader and often displacing other social networks, much as it outflanked MySpace in the United States.

But it has also come to be seen as one of the new titans of the Internet, challenging even Google with a vision of a web tied together through personal relationships and recommendations, rather than by search algorithms. In a major expansion, Facebook has spread itself across other websites by offering members the chance to "Like'' something -- share it with their network -- without leaving the web page they're on.

In November 2010, Mr. Zuckerberg introduced Facebook Messages, a new unified messaging system that allows people to communicate with one another on the Web and on mobile phones regardless of whether they are using e-mail, text messages or online chat services.

In January, 2011, Facebook raised $500 million from Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor in a deal that values the company at $50 billion -- more than companies like eBay, Yahoo and Time Warner. The stake by Goldman Sachs, considered one of Wall Street’s savviest investors, signals the increasing might of Facebook, which has already been bearing down on giants like Google.

Mr. Zuckerberg had sought to keep close control over the company, spurning a $1 billion offer from Yahoo in 2006 and playing down the idea of a stock offering. But in the wake of the Goldman investment, Facebook said that it will begin reporting its financial results by April 2012, setting the stage for a likely IPO.

The company, based in Palo Alto, Calif., earned $355 million on $1.2 billion in revenue during the first nine months of 2010, according to a document prepared by Goldman for potential investors. That is up from $220 million in earnings on $770 million in sales in 2009.

Like other social networks, Facebook allows its users to create a profile page and forge online links with friends and acquaintances. It has distinguished itself from rivals, partly by imposing a spartan design ethos and limiting how users can change the appearance of their profile pages. That has cut down on visual clutter and threats like spam, which plague rivals. It has decisively outstripped other networks that preceded it, like MySpace and Friendster, becoming what many analysts see as the "default platform'' of a new age of information organized around personal relationships.

Facebook built its lead not only through savvy design but rapid deployment of features that allowed the content created by users to multiply the site's appeal. In May 2007, Facebook unveiled an initiative called Facebook Platform, inviting third-party software makers to create programs for the service and to make money on advertising alongside them. The announcement stimulated the creation of hundreds of new features or "social applications" on Facebook, from games to new music and photo sharing tools, which had the effect of further turbo-charging activity on the site.

Facebook Messages is a bold move by Facebook to expand from a social network into a full-fledged communications system. It could help the company chip away even more at Internet portals like Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL, which have used e-mail as one of their main draws with consumers.

In addition to channeling all e-mails, text messages and chats through a single point, Facebook Messages will offer users what Mr. Zuckerberg called a “social in-box” that will prioritize messages from friends and close acquaintances, potentially saving time. The company faces a number of challenges, however, like managing spam, getting users to change ingrained habits and persuading some to entrust their confidential e-mail to a company whose privacy practices have often drawn scrutiny.

Disputed Origins

Facebook's rise has been marked by strings of controversies. Three other Harvard students maintain that they came up with the original idea and that Mr. Zuckerberg, whom they had hired to write code for the site, stole the idea to create Facebook. Facebook has denied the allegations. A long-running lawsuit is pending. Another Harvard classmate, Aaron Greenspan, claims that he created the underlying architecture for both companies, but has declined to enter the legal battle.

A movie about Facebook’s tumultuous origins, "The Social Network," offers up what A.O. Scott called "a creation story for the digital age and something of a morality tale, one driven by desire, marked by triumph, tainted by betrayal and inspired by the new gospel: the geek shall inherit the earth."

Facebook has strenuously, and Mr. Zuckerberg more quietly, asserted that the portrayal of the company's founding is fiction. And Mr. Zuckerberg disputed the characterization of him in the film, though in a New Yorker magazine profile, he acknowledged having indulged in a bit of sophomoric arrogance.

Privacy Concerns

The back and forth between Facebook and its users over privacy is gaining importance as the company's growth continues unabated. Facebook's policies, more than those of any other company, are helping to define standards for privacy in the Internet age.

Bowing to pressure over privacy concerns, the company in May 2010 unveiled a set of controls that he said would help people understand what they were sharing online, and with whom.

Facebook's biggest mistake, Mr. Zuckerman said, had been in failing to notice that as Facebook added new features and its privacy controls grew increasingly complicated, those controls became effectively unusable for many people.

In October 2010, Facebook acknowledged that some applications on its site, including the popular game FarmVille, had improperly shared identifying information about users, and in some cases their friends, with advertisers and Web tracking companies. The company said it was talking to application developers about how they handled personal information, and was looking at ways to prevent this from happening again.

The Goldman Deal

In January 2011, Facebook raised $500 million from Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor in a transaction that values the company at $50 billion.As part of its deal with Facebook, Goldman is expected to raise as much as $1.5 billion from investors for Facebook.

The new money will give Facebook more firepower to steal away valuable employees, develop new products and possibly pursue acquisitions — all without being a publicly traded company. The investment may also allow earlier shareholders, including Facebook employees, to cash out at least some of their stakes.

The new investment came as the Securities and Exchange Commission has begun an inquiry into the increasingly hot private market for shares in Internet companies, including Facebook, Twitter, the gaming site Zynga and LinkedIn, an online professional networking site. Some experts suggest the inquiry is focused on whether certain companies are improperly using the private market to get around public disclosure requirements.

Before Goldman Sachs bought a stake in Facebook and started offering shares to wealthy clients, a powerful investment group within the firm turned down the chance to buy a piece of the social networking site.

The unit’s chief, Richard A. Friedman, a longtime Goldman partner, decided the Facebook deal was not suitable for his clients, in part owing to the high valuation and to a mismatch with his investment criteria. The $450 million investment values the Web company at $50 billion. After Goldman’s deal, some industry experts cautioned that Facebook’s growth would need to accelerate rapidly over the next couple of years to justify such a steep price — a risk with many brand-name technology upstarts.
